Zlurppy

ARTIST BIO:

British born, but living and working in Thailand, colour puking on canvas and paper, creating attention grabbing, thought provoking works, the artist aims to express human history, human nature, and human possibility through a single, recognisable, albeit ever shifting character—Zlurppy.

Zlurppy is a conflicted, flawed, beautiful, terrible human, surfing eternity's edge, making mistakes and creating marvels, one incarnation at a time, creeping closer to nirvana. They represent all humans and their myriad aspects. From the good and beautiful to the bad and ugly. From ancient Zlurppies of yore covered in hair and living in trees, to modern Zlurppies parading around in Chanel whilst other Zlurppies starve.

The name, Zlurppy, was inspired by the human proclivity to consume everything, smacking their lips gleefully and slurping as they devour miscellaneous dead (and sometimes alive) creatures, information, resources, and pretty much anything edible, absorbable or usable on Earth, feeding their meat bodies and amorphous spirits.

You are Zlurppy.

The artist is Zlurppy.

Hooded Zlurppy

Social Zlurppy.JPEG

Social Zlurppy

Description: On social media, we seek the validation and praise that we rarely receive in real life–the dopamine rush of a red heart and a thumbs up. Social Media is another addiction, and one, according to a certain Netflix documentary, that poses an actual threat to civilization: a depression epidemic, fueling the culture wars, and causing kids to asphyxiate themselves because they saw it on A Tik Tok challenge.

And yet, I scroll and scroll.

Zlurppy Smoking a Cigarette.JPEG

Zlurppy Smoking a Cigarette.

Description: Zlurppies regularly indulge in self-destructive behaviour, even though they are the only creatures aware of their inevitable deaths. Are they innately nihilistic, indulging in these actions, or are they all just trying to cope with the challenging world in which they find themselves?

The Evolution of Zlurppy

Description: From the moment we wriggled from the primordial soup, sprouted appendages, ascended the trees, and developed our sense of ‘here’ and ‘there’, we
have been awed by the world. But partaking in nature was never enough. We sought to shape it, our beautiful simian hands the keys to unlocking the secrets of the cosmos.

All Seeing Eye.png

33,000 THB

All Seeing Eye

Description: There are mysteries in zlurppies’ ancient history that they still struggle to understand. Take the Pyramids of Egypt, perhaps the most iconic symbol of ancient zlurppies’ accomplishments. Theories abound. Aliens descended from space and built them, positioning them to mirror the stars of Orion’s Belt, their home system. Atlantians built them. Egyptians used the power of levitation to move the blocks. Knowing zlurppies, the truth is probably the most boring and savage. That the pyramids were made from the blood and sweat of slaves.

Zlurppy Eating Their Third Eye

Description: Capitalist culture is spiritually blinding us. Brought up in a world of bread and circuses, we struggle to find meaning and a greater purpose. What are we but robots, consuming from cradle to grave? If we all stopped chewing on our third eyes and spent some time trying to see through them, the artist wonders how society might change.

RIP Your Mum

Description: In life, our only certainty is death. Everyone who walks the Earth now will be gone in a hundred years. What does our brief soiree on this planet mean? How can we infuse our lives with
purpose? If actions, small or large, reverberate through time, maybe it is enough to simply be kind and to love.

Let’s be Friends

Description: The artist is fascinated that zlurppies of yore formed symbiotic relationships with one of Earth’s most savage predators, the wolf. How brilliant that they co-evolved together, turning once ferocious beasts into the cute, docile creatures we see today. But is the artist talking about dogs or zlurppies? Who
tamed who?

My Dress, Bitch!

Description: Marilyn Monroe rolls in her grave at the sight of Kim K sauntering down the red carpet in her dress! Some say it’s meta how a celeb, famous for being famous, appropriates the dress of the most infamous icon in the history of popular culture. Others think the
whole thing is grotesque, the skin of Marilyn reanimated, her ghost that has long haunted our memories, now on every social media feed, the story of how Kim K did (or didn’t squeeze into it) looping in our brains.

Plastic Bottles in Landscapes #1

Description: In this series, plastic bottles with real labels are strewn in a variety of landscapes. Water is perhaps the ultimate symbol of capitalism. A commodity that is essentially the same, and that is critical to humans is bottled, branded and sold in receptacles that will, relative to the length of a human life span, pollute our environments forever.

Across the Oceans

Description: Desperate people risk their lives on flimsy boats to cross oceans in hope of reaching a better world. So many succumb to the ocean’s cruel waves as a result. If the heavenly utopian dream is an illusion, and home is Hell, then perhaps the only freedom lies in death and liberation from the human body at the bottom of the sea.

Description: The three finger salute, used in the film The Hunger Games as a sign of rebellion and

defiance against the ruling class has been commandeered for use in South East Asia, particularly Thailand. In this piece, the salute is shown against Victory Monument, a Bangkok megalith constructed in remembrance of the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai war. Together the salute and the word victory ask the viewer to question the status quo, and ponder whether victory over oppression is even possible.
